Twins, Rich and Rob Kwait, are Cabin Dogs and their Mountain Sun (Crippled Hound Records) takes off where The Band ended. Maybe that’s because this self-released self-produced follow-up to 2011’s Midnight Trail and 2006’s Electric Cabin (produced by The Band’s Professor Louie) is filled with the kind of Band-like chops that fans of the rockin’ side of Americana music love. Rich plays guitar, mandolin and percussion. Rob plays bass, banjo, mandolin, guitar, percussion and harmonica. And their voices fit together like only twins can. They’ve got fiddle, drums, piano, organ, synthesizer and pedal steel in their septet. They’ve got no less than 16 originals under the Mountain Sun and one is better than the next. They’re based in Philadelphia now after a lifetime in upstate New York, and they’re always gigging. Catch ‘em if you can.
Mountain Sun has been on the charts. Here's some of the latest positions:
#25 RMR Rock
#20 RMR Roots Rock

“THIS IS THE BENCHMARK THAT EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS SHOULD BE AIMING TO ACHIEVE...” (MAVERICK)
Twin brothers, Rich and Rob Kwait, keep their bond through music writing, recording, and playing. Through the twists and turns of daily life outside of Philadelphia, PA, these two brothers keep coming back to their roots—a cabin, their dogs and some time together to produce Mountain Sun (Crippled Hound)—another solid country-roots-groove record set for release in April 2018.
"It probably started back around 1982," explains Rich. "Playing wiffle ball and listening to Pink Floyd from a boom box, making tape after tape of song snippets, debating the good parts, the hook, the bridge, crossing genres—country, singer-songwriter, psychedelic stuff—driving our friends crazy."
Fast forward to 1998, the brothers bought a six-track recorder and headed up to Au Sable Forks NY to put some ideas down. They came away with enough material to fill two original records under the name Kwait Brothers Band (2000's Hillside and 2002’s Outland Disco). "We still play a ton of those songs live today. Those first two records are how we recruited the band. They were fans."
In 2005, the brothers headed up to Woodstock, NY to write a new batch of songs and record it with Professor Louie (The Band, Rick Danko). The album, Electric Cabin, under the new name CABIN DOGS, garnered praise in Americana circles, and the brothers were compared to a Robertson-Danko team / sound.
The brothers soon built their home studio outside of Philadelphia and produced Midnight Trail in 2011. With their newest release, Mountain Sun (recorded at home and in rural New York) they are finally starting to get the attention they deserve.
Cabin Dogs' music has always strived for the familiar while in search of beauty in unlikely places. Mountain Sun continues this tradition. The first single from the album, 'On the Road' , is being compared to prime Neil Young and fans of the band are pleased. They've just come off a record pre-launch show with Larry Campbell and Theresa Williams with a full schedule lined up for the spring and summer 2018.
The band plays it's final scheduled show of 2017 at Puck in Doylestown on Saturday 12/2. Good to see our old friends there and jam one of the finest sounding venues around! The rest of the month will be holiday stuff and prepping the new album for official release (early 2018). Look for details (name, track list, etc.) and advance streaming coming soon!!! Other musical surprises are in the works (hint: KBB!)... Happy holidays to all! 2018 = year of the Cabin Dog!
